James and Andris say that they have some new ideas for the road course for Memphis 2008, and we are all looking forward to hearing all about them. As two incurable trackaholics, it promises to be exciting.
prior to the event. To that end each driver will be required to have the Tech Inspection Checklist filled out, dated and signed by him/herself and a competent mechanic no earlier than 2 weeks prior to the event. Your Tech Inspection Checklist will be turned in to the Lead Tech Inspector, who will also do a quick "grid tech" (checking safety gear, brake lights & ensuring you have unloaded anything loose in your car) before your car is allowed out on track.
Each and every driver has enough time between now and the Event to ensure their car meets the minimum requirements as listed on the Tech Inspection Checklist form. Infractions will not be tolerated. We would like to think the drivers would not try to get one over on us; you will be affecting not only your own safety, but the safety of friends running on the course with you and spectators watching.
The Pit Marshall runs the event while the track is hot. His/her word is final, no exceptions. You do not do anything unless the Pit Marshall okays it. He/she is like an orchestra conductor at 140mph. He/she coordinates when your group stages in the hot pits, when each car starts their session, confirms your -solo- status, ensures the course is clear, and coordinates communications with the corner workers and PA Announcer. The Pit Marshall will be very busy so he should not be distracted while he/she is working. If you as a driver have a question, please see an instructor, corner worker or tech. If they can not resolve it see the Lead Instructor, Lead Corner Worker or Lead Tech. If they can not resolve it, they will pass your concerns on to the Pit Marshall. If you insist on distracting the Pit Marshall, you will be penalized one black flag regardless of the reason.
Lead Instructor - Andris Skulte
He will prepare a lesson and brief road course drivers on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. He will coordinate pairing beginner drivers with instructors. He will be responsible for distributing -Solo Stickers- to those drivers who do not need an instructor in car. He & the Pit Marshall will have final say on whether a driver is promoted or demoted up or down a level.
Instructors -
Instructors are hand picked, experienced, and skilled drivers. They are very comfortable with the f-body in road course situations. They will instruct all beginner drivers on both days giving pointers on the line and basic high speed driving principles as per teaching guidelines. They will be available throughout the event if requested by any driver. Instructors will report any violations of rules and regulations to the Lead Instructor. All issues not solvable by Instructors will be passed to the Lead Instructor.
o See list below in road course groups
Lead Tech Inspector 13 He/she will prepare the Tech Inspection Checklist and make it available to download for all participants. Before your car is allowed out on track, the completed Tech Inspection Checklist form will be turned in to the Lead Tech Inspector who will also check your safety gear at the same time. He/she & the Pit Marshall will have the last word on whether a car is road course worthy.
o Instructor names go here
PA Announcer - It is the responsibility of the PA Announcer to call groups to the grid and announce corner worker assignments. Please pay attention to all announcements as this is very important to the smooth operation of the event. The Pit Marshall and the PA Announcer must work closely together.
o Pit Marshall and Track Announcer go here!
Corner Workers - For Memphis 2008, Corner Workers will be hired from the track. Otherwise, see the rest of this section for corner workers procedures. The Road Course Organizer will coordinate with the hired workers.
time, at the hot pits on time, you'll get maximum time on track. Its as simple as that. So, read the following schedule with this in mind :-).
The event will be split between Thursday morning & Friday afternoon. Time will be tight in order to get all 6 sessions completed. The hairiest part of the schedule will be early Thursday morning from 7:00AM to 8:45AM. Basically that's the time from when the gates open to the time all the groups begin running their regular schedule. We cannot stress enough how important it is that everyone be on time because there is a lot to do. It'll go something like this:
- You'll wake up bright eyed, bushy tailed and rested early Thursday morning.
- Regardless of how you do it, your car will be idling and ready to go in front of the track's closed gate well before 7:00AM.
- We will begin collecting tech inspection checklist forms outside the gate in order to save valuable time once the gates open. Its critical for the instructors to turn in their tech inspection checklist forms before the gates open.
- When the clock strikes 7:00AM you'll check in at the gates, pull up to the pits and unload quickly. All drivers' cars must be completely prepared by the start of the 7:45 driver's briefings.
- For instructors, after you've unloaded you should pull to the hot pits for the group 1 & 2 drivers' meeting and prepare for your warm up and familiarization runs from 8:00-8:40AM.
- VERY IMPORTANT - All group 3 & 4 drivers must attend the drivers meeting from 7:45 - 8:15AM. If any drivers miss the classroom or drivers meetings they will not be allowed on the track. No refunds.
- At 8:40AM, group 4 drivers should be at the hot pits where they will meet with their instructors and go out on their very first regularly scheduled session.
- Group 3 drivers should be at the hot pits by around 9:00AM ready for their very first regularly scheduled session.
After the Thursday morning classroom & parade lap sessions the schedule will be more regular throughout the rest of the event with groups 4 through 1 cycling through 20 minute on-track sessions. The first couple laps of each session will be done under yellow flag to ensure all tires heat up. There will be time to get fuel and enter and exit the track at breaks throughout the day. If you have any questions about the schedule, please, don't hesitate to ask.

Group 1/Instructors =================== Name # ---- --- Andris Skulte James Greenwell Dave Tittermary Group 2/Advanced =================== Name # ---- -- Group 3/Beginner =================== Name # ---- -- Group 4/Beginner ================ Name # ---- --
1. Safety 2. Driver's Position 3. Visual Awareness 4. Line 5. Overall Driving Skills 6. Solo Sign-Off
It is mandatory for the beginner groups to have an instructor ride along with them for both days unless you get checked off solo. The beginners can also opt to take a few laps in the instructors' cars as a passenger (this is highly recommended). Additionally, for the first day we will mark brake points, turn in, apex and exit points with cones to help the beginners get used to the track more quickly. Of course these cones will only mark suggested points as each driver has a different style.
Flags - One of the things that will be covered over and over till everyone memorizes it is flags. Flags will be used at all corner worker stations:
(green) - Course is clear, track is hot, proceed at speed and you're allowed to pass. Have fun!
(white) - Last hot lap.
(checkered) - Your session is done. Slow down, cool down and pit.
(yellow) - Slow down! Caution at the next corner. Absolutely no passing.
(blue) - When waved at you it means a faster car is behind you. Check your mirrors & let them pass.
(black) - Pit immediately. Something is very wrong with your car or your driving.
(red) - Check your mirrors, slow down ASAP, then pull to the inside. Drive very slowly till you get to the next corner station and then stop. Don't start moving again until you are notified. Most likely everyone will get a black flag after a red flag, which indicates that everyone must proceed to the pits slowly.
Hand Signals: Passing & Pitting - One of the things you will learn is where and how to pass. Don't get the idea that this event is a real race. Passing is strictly controlled. There are only three passing zones on the course and they are all on straight sections of the track:
o The first passing zone is the front straight between the end of turn 15a and the beginning of turn 1.
o The second passing zone is the back straight between turns 5 & 6.
o The final passing zone is a short one between turns 11 & 12.
Passing is accomplished with hand signals. If a car is faster than you and closing from behind, you will allow them to pass you at the designated pass zones by indicating with a hand signal. You will extend your hand out the window and point over the top of the car and to the right. This will indicate to the faster driver behind you that he is cleared to pass you on your right.
All passing is done off the driving line; IOW, the slower car maintains the optimal line on the left and the faster car passes you off line on the right. The slower driver will come off the throttle (no need for brakes) and let the faster driver pass.
The faster driver will never pass without the proper hand signal from the slower driver. Doing so will result in a black flag on the offending faster driver. No exceptions. On the other hand if you as a slower driver are found to be holding up traffic, then a blue flag will be waved at you to indicate so. If the slower driver persists in holding up traffic, then the slower driver may be black flagged. Basically, be aware of your surroundings while out on course.
The only other hand signal to be used is the "pitting" hand signal. If you feel like you need to pit in
the middle of a session you simply stick your left arm out of your window, straight up in the air with your hand balled into a fist. You want to do this in plenty of time to give the driver behind you enough time to slow down. On the approach to the pits you must be sure to be offline and in the "pit-in" lane. The "pit-in" lane hugs the right side of the track towards the end of the straight between turns 5 & 6.
Reasons for pitting in the middle of a session include being black flagged (mandatory), feeling tired or fatigued, mechanical problems, or even avoiding "trains".
Passengers - There will be no passengers allowed for any drivers on day one. This will allow beginner drivers the option of riding with instructors. Passengers will be allowed for all drivers who have been checked off solo on day two. All passengers must wear the same protective clothing required by the driver (long pants, shirt, socks, shoes, & helmet) and must be strapped in with at least the same restraints as the driver is using.
In Case of Rain - The road course event runs rain or shine but due to the treacherous conditions that rain on the dragstrip front straight causes we will alter the use of the road course. You will leave the pits one at a time and run the track normally until you get to turn 15a. Starting with turn 14 or 15 a standing yellow will be displayed. Instead of continuing onto the front straight, you enter the small service road to the left of the front straight at 25mph. Before turning back onto the dragstrip you will come to a complete stop and then merge back onto the front straight just past the dragstrip timing display. We do this to bypass the super slick dragstrip area. All drivers will continue like this until the front stretch is deemed dry enough to run on again.
Non-negotiable Rules - The following lists behavior that will not be tolerated. This behavior will get you expelled from the event - no exceptions:
o Use of nitrous on the road course. o Not using a seat belt. o Not using an approved helmet. Cannot be older than the current rating or the previous 2 Snell rating periods. In other words, if the year is 2008, then your helmet must be rated either an SA/M'05 (current), 2000 or '95 (previous 2 ratings). o Consumption of alcoholic beverages at any time at the track facility. o Failure to observe/follow corner worker flags. o Driving in an unsafe manner two or more times in a day, ie; two black flags per day. o Passing under a yellow flag. o Passing anywhere other than passing zones. o Reckless Driving.
